چکیده

To help understand and determine the driver of jovian auroral X-rays, we present first statistical study to focus on morphology dynamics northern hot spot (NHS) using Chandra data. The catalog explore dates from December 18, 2000 up including September 8, 2019. Using a numerical criterion, characterize typical extreme behavior concentrated NHS emissions across catalog. mean power is found be 1.91 GW with maximum brightness 2.02 Rayleighs (R), representing by far brightest parts X-ray spectrum. We report statistically significant region at center which always present, averaged nucleus (AHSNuc), 0.57 inferred average 1.2 R. use flux equivalence mapping model link this distinct output likely source location find that majority mappable photons emanate pre-dusk pre-midnight sector, coincident dusk flank boundary. A smaller cluster maps noon magnetopause boundary, dominated AHSNuc, suggesting there may multiple drivers emissions. On application timing analysis techniques (Rayleigh, Monte Carlo, Jackknife), identify several instances quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in ranging 2.3 36.4 min, possible links ultra-low frequency activity boundary (e.g., dayside reconnection, Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities).

Two Classes of Hot Jupiters

We identify two classes of transiting planet, based on their equilibrium temperatures and Safronov numbers. We examine various possible explanations for the dichotomy. It may reflect the influence of planet or planetesimal scattering in determining when planetary migration stops. Another possibility is that some planets lose more mass to evaporation than others. If this evaporation process pref...

Hot Jupiters: Lands of Plenty

In late August 2005, 80 researchers from more than 15 countries convened for a 4-day conference entitled “The Tenth Anniversary of 51 Peg b: Status and Prospects for Hot Jupiter Studies”. The meeting was held at l’Observatoire de Haute-Provence, the location of the 1.93-m telescope and ELODIE spectrograph used to discover the planetary companion to 51 Peg roughly 10 years ago. I summarize sever...

Atmospheric escape from hot Jupiters

The extra-solar planet HD209458b has been found to have an extended atmosphere of escaping atomic hydrogen (Vidal-Madjar et al. 2003), suggesting that “hot Jupiters” closer to their parent stars could evaporate. Here we estimate the atmospheric escape (so called evaporation rate) from hot Jupiters and their corresponding life time against evaporation. The calculated evaporation rate of HD209458...

Jupiter’s polar auroral emissions

[1] This paper reports a study of Jupiter’s polar auroral emissions observed in an extended series of FUV images. They were obtained on seven days, during winter 2000–2001, with the STIS camera on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The fixed pointing yielded highly accurate and consistent tracking of emisson features as Jupiter rotated, allowing the analysis of the auroral morphology and brightn...

Obliquity Tides on Hot Jupiters

Obliquity tides are a potentially important source of heat for extrasolar planets on close-in orbits. Although tidal dissipation will usually reduce the obliquity to zero, a nonzero obliquity can persist if the planet is in a Cassini state, a resonance between spin precession and orbital precession. Obliquity tides might be the cause of the anomalously large size of the transiting planet HD 209...
